Choosing The Spectacular

the Protea
Symbol of purity, a graceful sculptured living tribute to spring! Its abundance
from early spring till mid summer in the coastal region of California is most
apparent! It can be seen in large clumps with it's graceful swan like bracts
held aloft on two to three foot stems in many gardens throughout
northern California. A staple for arranging elegant bouquets
and in large vases. It's long, broad leaves are effective
when cut and used to hold their large flowers erect
in their containers. Blends with most every
spring flower and color, and it always
lends an air of elegance and
and dignity to every
setting!

the Sun Flower!
a splendid choice that comes in many sizes and colors
from pale yellow to bright orange petals, with pale green to deep
red mahogany centers; from dwarf to giants with six to eight foot stalks. This is an
annual, so don't buy pots of them thinking to transplant them after the event! They will not
bloom again, and the plant dies after the first blooming period. They are, however, a long lasting
cut flower, and look absolutely stunning with all shades of blues, lavenders purples.
Large bouquets of giant sunflowers combined with the long velvety deep purple
arms of the "Mexican Sage" (Salvia, Mexican Bush sage 'Leucantha')
which blooms in many gardens along the coast from
central
California to the Oregon border during the time when
sunflowers are most plentiful.

TIPS FOR KEEPING FLOWERS FRESH
from the
American Society of Florists
- Start with a clean vase (wash with soap & water to remove bacteria).
- Remove any leaves that will be submerged in water.
- Recut stems while holding under water (prevents stem bleeding).
- Re-cut stems using above method every three days (allow water absorption).
- Re-cut, add fresh flower food & clean vase every 3 or 4 days.
- Place flowers in a draft free setting, avoid direct sunlight & heating vents.
